Something new: beef bratwurst
In your box if you ordered beef. Available by the pound for $8 for everyone else.
We tried something new with the last steer that we took to the butcher: beef + pork bratwurst. Beef is too lean on its own for decent brats, we had the butcher mix in pork fat. The result is a delicious sausage perfect for summer grilling! If you don’t or can’t eat pork, let us know and we will swap out your bratwurst for something else.
Like our pure pork brats, you will want to boil these first, preferably in cheap beer. Then place them on the grill or in a cast iron frying pan. If you don’t have beef in your order and wish to purchase some, there is a box in the far right of the glass door freezer. $8/pound on the honor system.
Free garlic scapes
The Meat Club is about more than just tasty, ethically-raised meat. We also want to connect you with other exceptional local food. Our friends Kevin and Tiffany at Great Lakes Garlic Farm (www.greatlakesgarlicfarm.com) grow the best garlic we’ve ever eaten. Bulbs are not harvested until August, but coming up shortly is the “garlic scape” harvest. Use scapes in your cooking like garlic or scallions. They are tasty mixed in with scrambled eggs or in beef bolognese. Learn more here: https://www.chatelaine.com/food/garlic-scapes-faq/. We will have scapes free for your sampling in the next week or two! And remember to look for Tiffany at the Sarah Hardy Farmers’ Market later this summer (or buy from their website).
“Are they ever going to mow the lawn?”
You probably asked yourself that during your last two pick-ups. We admit that we dread mowing the lawn. There are so many other productive tasks awaiting us on the farm during the busy months of Spring. And given our efforts to graze animals and cut/bale hay, mowing the lawn always feels silly and wasteful. But nonetheless, we admit that a tidy and trimmed yard does look pretty good, and instills confidence in the observer that we have the rest of our farm systems in order. We bought a new (to us) commercial mower, but parts were delayed, and our grass kept growing. But now the mower is ready, so the unruly weeds surrounding our drives and buildings will be cut soon!
